AkzoNobel and Icelandair let fly with stunning new livery

June 22, 2018

Iceland’s rich and vivid history is being celebrated with colorful new livery launched by Icelandair, which was specially created using AkzoNobel products.

Featuring the company’s latest generation base coat/clear coat system and Aerodur 3001/3002 range, the aircraft is also coated with Aeroflex wing coatings and Aerofine interior cabin coatings. One of its first jobs was to fly Iceland football fans to Russia.

“We have been partners with Icelandair for many years and were delighted to supply products for their eye-catching new livery,” said John Griffin, Director of AkzoNobel’s Aerospace Coatings business. “The design looks stunning and our high performance coatings will continue to provide the kind of protection and endurance that has helped Icelandic culture and heritage to thrive for so many years.”

Added Icelandair’s Jón Skafti Kristjánsson, Director of Marketing: “We wanted to do something remarkable to celebrate these milestones in Iceland’s history, Iceland’s sovereignty and the Icelandic National team’s debut at the World Cup, and are thrilled with the result. AkzoNobel products are used on the entire Icelandair fleet and we couldn’t be happier with the quality and efficiency of the solutions the company supplies. It’s a winning partnership in every sense."

AkzoNobel has pioneered and developed many of the coatings technologies used in the modern aerospace industry. This includes waterborne coatings, base coat/clear coat systems, high solids/low VOC coatings, peelable coatings, selectively removable systems and special effects coatings, as well as chrome-free systems.

The company’s recent acquisition of Disa Technology has also allowed AkzoNobel to expand its product portfolio to include film technology used on aircraft.

Added Griffin: “Our emphasis is on producing sustainable, high performance, cost-effective coatings that are easy to use. These qualities have been fundamental to our relationship with Icelandair, which is built on trust, service, quality and reliability.”

Icelandair’s new Boeing 757-300 is the carrier’s third aircraft to feature special livery. The other two are based on the Northern Lights and Europe’s second largest glacier, Vatnajokull. Both were created with AkzoNobel products.
