Bringing Okinawa’s iconic Jimbee Jet to life
In early 2026, Japan Transocean Air unveiled its latest Jimbee Jet, featuring a bold and distinctive new livery inspired by the whale shark, the movement and beauty of Okinawa’s marine life, and the lush forests of Yambaru and Iriomote. The livery reflects Japan Transocean Air’s dedication to preserving Okinawa’s vibrant oceans, rich forests, and natural heritage for future generations, while continuing the airline’s tradition of creating aircraft that connect passengers with the region’s identity.
The aircraft was painted by AirAsia in Taiwan using AkzoNobel’s Aerodur 3001/3002 basecoat/clearcoat system to deliver the vibrant colors and flowing design. Designed to bring complex liveries to life, the system ensures a consistent, high-quality finish across the entire aircraft, capturing every detail with clarity and depth while supporting a smooth and efficient application process.
Beyond its visual impact, Aerodur basecoat/clearcoat system is designed to provide a durable, long-lasting finish that helps maintain color vibrancy and protects the aircraft throughout its operational life. For projects like Jimbee Jet, its efficient application characteristics also support faster turnaround times, helping airlines reduce time on the ground while maintaining the highest standards of quality and consistency.
The project was also supported by AkzoNobel’s technical and color expertise in Asia, backed by its wider global network. Working closely with customers and application partners, the regional team supports livery projects from the initial color development through to final application.
Following its unveiling on 19 January, the Jimbee Jet demonstrates how aircraft coatings can help airlines translate distinctive design concepts into a finished aircraft livery, combining visual identity with the performance requirements of commercial aviation.
